Sweet Relief: How CBD Can Help You Manage Your Pain

Some say that CBD works for pain, but how exactly does it work? Learn more about how CBD can help you manage your pain with our guide.

According to research, more people in America suffer from chronic pain than they do diabetes, cancer, and heart disease combined. This includes everything from muscle pain to joint pain and everything in between.

Unfortunately, many who suffer from pain deal with their symptoms by taking pharmaceuticals. These can be highly addictive and come with various short- and long-term side effects.

Luckily, today, there are natural alternatives available. One of these is cannabis. Or, more specifically, CBD. Here is everything you need to know about CBD for pain.

CBD Explained

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound that comes from the marijuana plant. It has various therapeutic advantages and is now undergoing trials to find out which symptoms and conditions it can help treat.

By tapping into the endocannabinoid system, CBD can help regulate everything from our physiology to our mood. As a result, it has the ability to affect our everyday activities and lives as a whole.

Today, companies are extracting CBD from the marijuana plant and selling it in the form of:

  • Oils
  • Edibles
  • Wax
  • Smokables
  • Drinkables

While CBD is from the cannabis plant, it isn't the same as its cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Unlike THC, CBD doesn't get you high. Because it doesn't have any psychoactive effects, CBD won't alter your state of mind.

Also, because pure CBD doesn't get you high, it is legal in most states. In fact, you can now find oils and CBD flowers in various shops across the US and other parts of the world.

How Does CBD Work with Pain

CBD interacts with the receptors in your immune system and brain. These receptors are tiny proteins that affect the cells that receive chemical signals from different stimuli. By interacting with them, CBD creates pain-killing and anti-inflammatory effects.

With the above in mind, there is clear evidence that CBD can help people suffering from different forms of pain.

In fact, in 2008, there was an assessment of how well CBD works when it comes to pain. This assessment looked at studies between 1980 and 2007. The review showed that CBD was successful in combatting pain with little to no adverse side effects.

The Types of Pain That CBD Can Treat

Now that you know how CBD works to treat pain, let's have a look at the different types of pain the substance can address:

Arthritic Pain

Arthritis affects one or multiple joints in the body. The condition causes swelling which can, in turn, cause extreme pain. While many take over-the-counter medication to relieve some of the pain, there is now proof that CBD can also have a positive effect.

During a study, researchers applied topical CBD gel to rats with arthritis. After four days, the results showed that there was a significant decrease in pain and inflammation. Moreover, the study concluded no other side effects.

While this study was on rats, people may also find relief from their arthritis-related pain by using CBD. the best way to use CBD for arthritis is in topical form. However, you can also try oils or you may want to smoke the flowers.

Chronic Pain

There are various causes of chronic pain. These include but aren't limited to:

  • Damage to the nerves
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Pelvic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Back pain
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Cancer and cancer-related treatments

According to a 2017 report, results show that adults with chronic pain who receive CBD treatment are more likely to experience a decrease in symptoms

Not only this, research suggests that patients aren't likely to build a tolerance to CBD. This means that they wouldn't have to increase their dose on a regular basis.

Pain Associated with Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects the nerves and brain, thus having a detrimental impact on the entire body. This autoimmune disease sends spasms to the muscles.

Unfortunately, these spasms can be so strong that they send shooting pains throughout the body. Luckily, CBD can reduce these spasms by relaxing the muscles while also offering a calming effect on the mind.

Results from the report mentioned above show that the oral use of cannabinoids can reduce MS-induced spasms. While these findings were modest, there is proof that the plant can help if a person receives the right strain and dosage.

Side Effects of CBD

On the whole, the side effects of using CBD are little to none. But, everyone reacts differently to different substances. With this in mind, you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Weight fluctuations
  • Diarrhea
  • Appetite changes
  • Tiredness

Also, the way CBD affects you depends largely on your lifestyle. For example, if you are using other drugs, you may find that the CBD is more or less effective. The CBD may also have an impact on the way the drugs you're taking affect you.

Furthermore, there is little research on the long-term effects of CBD. With this in mind, you may want to consult your physician before taking CBD if you have any long-term conditions or are taking other forms of medication.

Getting the Dosage Right

While CBD can be great for treating pain, it's important that you take the right dose. You should also find out where your CBD comes from as some manufacturers mix it with other, harmful chemicals and products.

Additionally, if you suffer from a specific condition for which you are receiving treatment, it's important that you tell your doctor that you want to use CBD. By doing so, they may even be able to help you choose the right strain for your individual symptoms.
