Terpene Talks: Linalool

Before continuing, we recommend reading our blog post “What are Terpenes?“, to better understand terpenes and their function in the hemp and cannabis world.

We have previously introduced terpenes capable of delivering major results. In such cases, “minor” is defined as a smaller quantity than major terpenes deliver. But “minor” does not necessarily mean less effective. For example, a minor amount of some spices, like pepper, can go far. With terpenes, the picture is similar. So let’s discuss a minor terpene that makes pretty big waves: linalool.

This terpene presents the simpler structure of a monoterpene but linalool is far from simple. Many people correctly link linalool to lavender but that is merely one of many other plants and spices that produce this terpene.

This deeper dive into linalool will better inform you about its origins, flavors and fragrances, and potential benefits and uses.

Where Linalool Originates

It was already mentioned that linalool appears in many plants and spices. In fact, it is estimated that more than 200 plants and spices produce linalool. Here is an abbreviated list of plants producing linalool:

  • Bay Laurel
  • Birch Bark
  • Cinnamon
  • Coriander
  • Goldenrods
  • Hops
  • Laurel
  • Lavender
  • Mint
  • Rosewood
  • Sweet Basil
  • Sweet Orange

Such a broad variety of plants will obviously result in a variety of flavors and fragrances that linalool offers.

Linalool Flavors and Fragrances

Due to the wide range of plant life producing linalool, you can expect a variety of flavors and fragrances from linalool. The most common and recognizable flavors and fragrances found in linalool include:

  • Bergamot oil
  • Blueberry
  • Citrus
  • Floral
  • Lily-of-the-Valley
  • Spicy
  • Tropical
  • Woodsy

As the above list demonstrates, this terpene is versatile enough to freshen the air or spice up a favorite dish. Of course, it is also a delightful addition to any hemp cultivar!

Potential Benefits of Linalool

While aromas and tastes are well and good, most people are attracted to linalool because of the potential wellness benefits it may offer. As with its flavor and fragrances, you will find a wonderful mix of possible wellness benefits, such as:

  • Alter Moods – when feeling low, linalool appears to help lift moods to a happier state
  • Ease Discomforts – combined with its relaxing properties, muscle tension can be released
  • Insect Repellant – the presence of linalool repels mosquitoes and other nasty pests
  • Relaxant – excellent for use at night to improve sleep and wake up refreshed
  • Support Immune System – its antimicrobial properties may reduce infections

Do keep in mind that effects typically vary between consumers. Although the above list appears to work for many people, this does not mean it will be equally effective for you. Also, you may find that physical or mental states may alter effects you previously experienced. Our bodies may be fascinating and intricate mechanisms but they are also often quirky!
